People think I'm kidding when I say pie can save the world. But I'm not. Pie is a magical food. It has magical properties.

I am delighted to share this philosophy with you and invite you to help save the world...one pie at a time.

 1) Pie allows us to expect joy.

Bring a pie to a party and watch people's reaction. Listen to the "oohs" and "ahhs". Listen to the jokes about eating dessert first. No other food gets as much appreciation as pie. Few other foods create as much anticipation as pie. Pie gives people something to look forward to. It brings out the child in all of us. Even at the most dysfunctional family holiday gatherings people don't leave before dessert. Why? Because they want to eat pie. They can see some future happiness. It's worth waiting for.

2) Pie evokes wholesome memories.

Ask someone about their favorite pie and listen to their story. They will tell you about some beloved grandma or aunt or mother who baked the most amazing apple or peach or shoofly pie. Watch their face. Their eyes will sparkle. They will grin. Their memory will bring up love and appreciation. They will revel in the delight the memory brings them. And inevitably, they will say, "What I wouldn't do for one more piece of Aunt Someone-or-other's pie..." Pie is a symbol of family and tradition. They remember the goodness. The deliciousness. The love they have for the person who made them that special timeless perfect pie.

3) Pie is filling.

Pie promotes a feeling of abundance. It sticks to your ribs. Pie was the original workhorse food. How many times have you heard the phrase "Save room for pie"? Traditionally served at the end of a meal a piece of pie can be a meal in itself. Take it from me--my favorite breakfast is a slice of apple pie with a hunk of cheddar cheese on top. Try it.

4) Pie is a treat.

Once a common everyday food, it is now a special dessert that belongs to picnics, holidays and special occasions. It takes time to create a pie. You can't rush its creation, and you slow down to savor it while eating. Because who knows the next time you'll get to eat your next slice of pie? Enjoy it while it lasts.

When we are anticipating joy, fondly remembering the past, certain to receive the sustenance we need and treating ourselves to a small delight we are about as far as we can get from anxiety, anger, worry, and the like. We are a small little bundle of light and love. Small little bundles of light and love can't help but radiate peace, love and understanding. And when we are radiating peace, love and understanding the beings around us can feel that. They sense the peace that we feel and they will respond in kind. Kind of like saving the world, right? Pass it on.
